New Year's Day Charity Walk

Some of you may have noticed that the main photo on our blog home page is (a rear view) of our great friend Claudine Caulfield, one of the original members of the Club, who passed away in September 2016. The photograph was taken in the Knockmealdowns in April 2014 during a recce for the St Declan's Way weekend planned for later that year. Her loss to the Club - as an adviser, confidante and gently encouraging friend-is still felt. Even now after a particularly good day out, I still hear people say 'Claudine would have loved that walk'. To remember Claudine and to acknowledge her contribution to the Club we walked the Flaggy Shore on New Year's Day 2017. It was a place she loved to walk herself and anyone who knew her or spent time with her will understand why. It was suggested that a walk in her memory be held on January 1st every year and combined with our charity event. So tomorrow, on January 1st 2019, we are leaving Gullane's car park at 9 am for the annual trip to the Flaggy Shore. This year we are raising funds for the Creagh/Ballinasloe Community First Responders (CFR) group,  a voluntary group which was founded and is run by both former and current members of the Club. The CFR group provides training in CPR and in the use of an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). For someone suffering a sudden cardiac arrest (i.e. a heart attack), the life-saving shock from an AED combined with CPR can double or triple a person's chance of survival. So please, put on your walking boots and come out tomorrow to support a very worthwhile community group, which directly benefits people in our local area.

A voluntary donation box will be passed around after the walk.

Date: January 1st 2019
Meeting Point: Gullane's car park to car pool. NB Parking limited in New Quay.
Departing: 9am
Grade: Easy loop walk
Length and duration: approx. 10kms-2 hours max.

Looking back....

Now that the walks for the coming year have been decided, we thought you might like to have a look back at some we've done. There were too many photos  to post individually (thanks BrĂd for saving them!), so we've put them together in a short video. Unfortunately they're not in order and the quality isn't great in fullscreen mode, but they should bring back some great memories-Derroura, St. Declan's Way, Antrim/North coast, Ben Nevis, Achill, Connemara, Correen Woods in 2013 and a Christmas challenge at Cuckoo Hill to name but a few. The mileage is high but the going is still good!

If anyone has any photos or memories of the early club walks/parties/days out and would like to share them, please get in touch via email and with your permission, we'll post them here.
